Hello Fall

Summer is great. There are simply things that you do in the summer that are not equally enjoyed any other time of the year. For example, summer is the time you can run to the neighborhood pool and jump in without wondering if the water is going to be too cold. Or, there is the knowledge that it doesn't matter what flavor of ice pop is left, on a 100 degree day you will take anything frozen. Then there are the long, bright days that start early and run well into 9pm. When are you going to get that in the winter?
However, there comes a point when all the sun is not all the fun it was cracked up to be. After weeks of unrelenting heat and days so humid you might as well skip the towel coming out of the shower, it is just time to call "UNCLE!" So as much as we love the outdoor activities and summer break from school, we are just thrilled to pick up the pompoms and shout the best four letter word there ever was. (No, potty mouths, we are not talking curses) Shout it with me. . . Gimme a  "F", gimme an "A", gimme a "L" gimme     another "L", what does it spell?  FALL!!!!!

This is what everyone should do on Sunday afternoon.

A little reading, a little sleeping makes a happy "little."

Hello Fall

Cameron's work which she named the Snot Shooter

Loaded Diaper

Hello dear Fall. We have really missed you here in Cary, NC. It is so good to get to know you again. I must admit, there was a time I thought you had packed your bags and changed hemispheres permanently. I sent an email and did not get a response. I even checked on Craigslist to see if you were hanging out there looking for a better location. Finally, I saw your subtle hints. As the break in the humidity fell upon us the children took advantage of your cool evening to carve pumpkins and run barefoot in the grass. The air felt crisp and pungent with a hint of dried leaves and the last few blossoms of the gardenia bush.
With any good change of season comes the need to rest, relax and change gears. So thank you fall for that lovely invitation this afternoon to linger on the back porch. The children were drawn to the couch much like the pied piper calls to all children. With books and blankets in hand they began to carve out a spot to read, relax and be lulled into a sweet slumber that only comes on a Sunday afternoon following church and a filling lunch. Bellies full and heads nodding they were unable to finish that last paragraph.
No worries. The slumber was filled with the sounds of the wind wafting through the trees, distant children playing, dogs calling to each other and the faint tinkling of the ice cream truck. (So glad they weren't awake for that one) If you listened closely, you could even hear the rhythm of a bouncing basketball several homes away interspersed with the metallic harmony of the overhead wind chimes. Life seemed to be in the perfect balance if only for an hour.
And so, as the long days give way to shorter days and longer nights we will gladly pull out the fleece jackets and linger a bit longer on the back porch as we watch the leaves flutter about before making their way to the lawn. We even look forward to the morning we need a warm cup of cocoa to take the chill from our fingertips. While summer has been a relatively good house guest, we are happy to see her go and invite the milder version in. Once again the Davis Family would like to say, "well hello Fall, come right in!"
