Let the Journey Begin

There are times I wonder if the weather is trying to tell me something, something like stay home or get out quick. Regardless of the message I have to think it has been consistent. From the first day we stopped at D&H RV Rental and purchased the RV it was raining like crazy. The day we were packing our Sun Seeker, or as the children have named it, “Fun Seeker,” it has rained. Now we aren’t talking a little rain, we are talking full blown tropical storm, monsoon, Noah build an arch kind of raining. I have been accused of being slow in the past, however, I got the hint this time. We finished packing and hit the road.

Our first stop was the Swannanoa KOA outside Asheville. We could not have asked for a better place to start the journey. We had an easy pull through spot and 5 minutes to hook up. Shortly upon arriving we were ready for a good night’s rest. The down side, and yes there was one, the train. Not just one train but 3 trains. There was the 1am train, the 3:30am train and the 6am train. I am sure the conductors blew that horn extra long just for all the campers. The train did not dampen the mood, however, Matthew and Ashton got up early and headed to the lake to do a bit of early morning fishing. Although they didn’t get any bites it was wonderful to see my own Andy and Opey heading back down the path with rods and reels in hand. I half expected to hear them whistle a tune on the way. After a long warm shower and a scenic route through the remainder of NC we headed for the hills and Tennessee.
First stop is Nashville. Yes country music lovers, I said Nashville! If I could sing I would break out into a verse of “Cheating Heart” by Hank Williams. Don’t worry, I don’t and won’t sing. Inside I headed for The KOA where we could hear some honky tonk tunes. As luck would have it the KOA is immediately next door to the Grand Ole Opry House. I have been straining to hear the strum of music and the all too familiar twang, but no such luck thus far.
I am sure the torrential rain has something to do with dampening the sound. Yes, I did say rain. We were very fortuitous to get camp set and have a wonderful swim in the pool with the children as we discussed tomorrow’s plans to head to downtown Nashville before the rain started. Just as we pulled dinner off the grill the lightening began to flash with furry. Inside we retreated inside to eat a tasty meal in the “Fun Seeker.” As for the rain, I am told it will pass and tomorrow will bring cool, clear skies. I am counting on it. As I get ready for bed I am lulled by the sound of the rain pattering on the rooftop. I can’t help but feeling extremely grateful we did not tent camp.  As for June 1st, perhaps we will take in the Country Music Hall of Fame, Andrew Jackson’s home site, the Parthenon and maybe even eat some BBQ.  It doesn’t much matter what we do as long as we do it together.
